Everything people ask before they book
If you are renting a dumpster for the first time, you probably have the same dozen questions everyone does: what it costs, what size, whether the City will want a permit, and what you cannot throw in. The answers below are the ones we give on the phone every day. If yours is not here, call (904) 595-8110 — a real person in Jacksonville will answer it.
Part 1
Pricing
How much does a dumpster rental cost in Jacksonville, FL?
In many cases rentals range from approximately $350 to $750 depending on the project, with no hidden fees. The price depends on the size, the type and weight of the debris, how long you keep it and the delivery location. You get a flat rate on the phone that typically covers delivery, pickup, disposal, the standard 7-day rental and the included weight — about 1 to 2 tons on a 10 yard, 2 to 3 on a 15, 3 to 4 on a 20, 4 to 5 on a 30 and 5 to 6 on a 40. Going over costs extra. The cost guide breaks it down.
Is delivery and pickup included in the price?
Yes. Delivery, pickup and disposal up to the included weight are typically all in the one flat price, along with the standard rental period. No hidden fuel surcharges.
What causes extra charges?
Three things: going over the included weight (extra disposal fees can apply based on the landfill's weight charges), keeping the container past the rental period (an additional daily or weekly fee), and material that has to be removed before pickup — an overfilled box or a banned item. We explain it all on the first call so there is nothing to find later.
Do you charge more for heavy materials like concrete or dirt?
Heavy debris such as concrete, dirt or brick may need a separate container or different pricing, and it uses up the included weight fast. So we size heavy loads differently — usually a 10 or 15 — and tell you where the weight line is before you load.
What payment methods do you accept?
Most major credit and debit cards. Payment is generally collected when your booking is confirmed, to reserve the delivery. Where an independent provider handles the rental, billing may be handled by that provider, and we tell you on the call.
Part 2
Sizing
What size dumpster do I need?
A 10 or 15 for smaller cleanups and heavy debris like concrete, dirt and shingles; a 15 for a kitchen or bath remodel, flooring or a yard cleanup; a 20 for a whole-home cleanout, a roof, a landscaping job or a multi-room remodel; a 30 for big renovations and estate cleanouts; a 40 for commercial construction and demolition. Weight decides for dense material — see the size guide.
What happens if I order too small?
You may need another pickup — and too large means paying for space you do not use. When in doubt, describe the job and let us size it. If your project grows, we can often swap the dumpster quickly.
What is the biggest dumpster you offer?
A 40 yard: about 22 ft × 7.5 ft × 8 ft, roughly 12 pickup loads, about 5–6 tons included. It is a job-site container, not a driveway one.
How full can I fill it?
Level with the top rim, no higher. Overfilled dumpsters cannot legally or safely be transported, and extra charges may apply if material has to be removed before pickup. Spread the weight evenly too.
How much does a roof tear-off produce?
It depends on the size of the roof. Our 10 and 20 yard containers are the ones most often used for roofing — asphalt shingles, underlayment, flashing — and shingles are heavy, so tell us the approximate roof size and we will recommend the box around the weight.
Part 3
Permits, placement and town rules
Do I need a permit to have a dumpster delivered?
On your own driveway or private property in Jacksonville, we found no City permit rule for a roll-off. In a City street, sidewalk or right-of-way, yes: Ordinance Code Sec. 744.110 makes it unlawful to block, obstruct or place any material on or in a City road, right-of-way or easement without a permit from the Director of Public Works. The Right-of-Way permit is $127 for a residential job or $191 commercial, the fee doubles if the work starts before the permit is issued, applications go through JaxEPICS, and an approved Maintenance of Traffic plan is needed for anything that affects traffic or pedestrians. Working without one can mean a fine of up to $250, each day a separate offense, and the Sheriff may remove an unlawful obstruction from a street (Sec. 746.102). The permit guide and your town page cover the details.
Can the dumpster go on the street if my driveway won't fit it?
On a City of Jacksonville street, with the Right-of-Way permit — the Development Services Review Group handles it, (904) 255-8310. On a state road, no: the right-of-way belongs to FDOT, whose rules cap waste receptacles on a state road at 110 gallons and four feet (Rule 14-20.008) and exclude them from its general use permit (Rule 14-20.010), so there is no permit path for a roll-off. Elsewhere: Atlantic Beach needs the public works director's written consent and never allows a roll-off on a paved road overnight (Sec. 16-8(d)(5)); Jacksonville Beach and Neptune Beach require a right-of-way permit (Sec. 28-20; Sec. 18-4); Green Cove Springs keeps containers on private property unless the city manager authorizes otherwise (Sec. 66-11); and Clay, St. Johns and Nassau counties each require a county right-of-way permit for anything placed in a county road. Tell us when you book and we line the delivery up with it.
Is my address inside the City of Jacksonville?
Very likely, if it is in Duval County — the City and the county are one consolidated government, and our own yard is inside it. The exceptions are Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and the Town of Baldwin, which keep their own codes and run their own garbage collection rules (Jacksonville Ord. Code Sec. 380.604(c)). Their town pages cover them.
Why do some of your town pages mention hauler franchises?
Because several apply. Jacksonville requires a City franchise for nonresidential (commercial) container service but exempts construction and demolition debris (Ord. Code Secs. 380.603 and 380.604). Clay County requires a county franchise to haul roll-offs in the unincorporated county (App. D, Art. III, Sec. III.9), St. Johns County a county franchise to collect or transport solid waste, C&D included (Ord. 2017-39, Sec. 4), and Nassau County a county hauler permit (Sec. 30½-76). Orange Park, Fernandina Beach, Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach keep collection to their franchisee or the city, with specific exceptions. We quote the section on each page, and for those four cities we check the City's rules before booking a container inside city limits. We are licensed and insured.
Does my HOA matter?
It can. Covenants can cover containers on your driveway, and we do not know your HOA's rules — check them before you book.
Will the dumpster damage my driveway?
We take precautions during placement and pickup, and protective boards can go under the container on request. Tell us before delivery if a surface needs more than that — and keep it off soft ground.
How much space does the truck need?
A flat, stable surface, room for the container — about 14 feet long for a 10 yard, 16 feet for a 15, and about 22 feet for a 20 and up, all about 7.5 feet wide — room for the truck to back in, and clear space overhead. Low wires, tree branches, parked cars, trailers and equipment are the usual problems.
Part 4
Booking and delivery
How do I book a dumpster?
Call (904) 595-8110. Tell us the address, what is going in and roughly how much, and we quote it flat and schedule it on the same call.
How fast can you deliver?
Same-day or next-day in many areas, depending on availability. Call early in the day for the best chance of same-day; the furthest places we cover are more likely next day.
What are your hours?
24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Storm requests go to the same number.
How long can I keep the dumpster?
Most standard rentals include 7 days. Call before the scheduled pickup and we can usually extend it for an additional daily or weekly fee — contractors on long job sites and homeowners on multi-week renovations do it all the time. A permit for a container in a street sets its own conditions, Atlantic Beach limits a container on a lot to 90 days unless there is an active building permit (Sec. 16-8(d)(9)), and Fernandina Beach allows a temporary roll-off 30 days per lot per year, renewable once, or for the life of a building permit (LDC Sec. 5.02.06). Your HOA may have its own limit.
Do I need to be home for delivery or pickup?
No. As long as we have clear placement instructions and the spot is accessible and clear of vehicles and equipment, the driver sets it down. Same for pickup.
Can I book multiple dumpsters at once?
Yes. Several dumpsters at once, staggered deliveries and scheduled rotations are routine for contractors and property managers.
Part 5
Service area
What towns do you serve?
Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Baldwin in Duval County; Orange Park, Fleming Island, Middleburg and Green Cove Springs in Clay; Ponte Vedra, Nocatee, Fruit Cove and St. Johns in St. Johns County; and Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, Yulee and Callahan in Nassau — each with its own page. The complete Jacksonville guide pulls it together.
Where are you based?
At 678 Edgewood Ave N, Jacksonville, FL 32254 — inside the City of Jacksonville, on the west side of town.
Is service different in the far towns?
Mostly the timing. Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island are about 38 to 39 road miles from the yard and more likely next day than same-day. Price depends partly on the delivery location, and we say any difference up front.
Do some towns restrict who can deliver a roll-off?
Yes. Orange Park lets only its franchisee or a town-licensed construction cleanup contractor collect (Sec. 28-26); Fernandina Beach reserves collection to the city or a contractor the City Commission approves (Sec. 66-36); Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach grant exclusive garbage franchises with a carve-out for services the contract does not cover; Green Cove Springs franchises C&D roll-off service (Sec. 66-11); and Clay, St. Johns and Nassau counties each require a county franchise or permit in the unincorporated county. For Orange Park, Fernandina Beach, Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach we check the City's rules before booking a container inside city limits. Each town page says what that code says.
Part 6
What we take
What can I put in a dumpster?
Furniture and household junk, wood and lumber, drywall and flooring, cabinets and countertops, roofing shingles and underlayment, packaging and cardboard, yard debris and branches, and construction and demolition debris — plus concrete, brick, dirt and tile within the weight limit, usually in a 10 or 15.
What can't go in a dumpster?
Florida keeps lead-acid batteries, used oil and white goods out of its landfills (F.S. 403.708(12)), whole tires out of landfills and C&D facilities (F.S. 403.717(3)(c); FDEP Rule 62-701.300(8)(b)), and rechargeable batteries out of mixed trash (F.S. 403.7192(3)). Noncontainerized liquids may not go into units that take household waste or C&D debris (Rule 62-701.300(10)) — though hardened, dried paint in a bucket is fine for a C&D load (Rule 62-701.730(7)(g)). We also keep out paints and solvents, hazardous chemicals, propane tanks and gas cylinders, flammable liquids, medical waste and asbestos. The what can and cannot go in guide says where each of those goes instead.
Can asbestos-containing material go in a dumpster?
No. Regulated asbestos may not be disposed of in a construction and demolition debris disposal unit (FDEP Rule 62-701.730(19)). Before a covered demolition — even with no asbestos found — FDEP wants a Notice of Demolition at least 10 working days ahead; in Duval County it goes to the City's Environmental Quality Division, Air Quality Branch (904-255-7100, asbestos@coj.net). Most homes of four or fewer units are exempt unless they are part of a bigger or commercial project. The district or local program can supply a list of permitted asbestos disposal sites. It never goes in a roll-off.
Can I put concrete, brick or dirt in a regular dumpster?
Yes, but heavy materials are typically restricted to the smaller containers — a 10 or 15 — because of transport weight limits. Heaped in a 20 or 30 it is more than the truck can safely haul, and in Atlantic Beach the city caps a heavy-debris roll-off at 20 yards anyway (Sec. 16-8(d)(4)). Uncontaminated concrete, including embedded pipe or steel, brick and glass count as clean debris under Florida law (F.S. 403.703(4)).
Can I put a mattress or an old appliance in?
Mattresses, yes — no Florida statute or rule names them, and furniture other than appliances is Class III waste. Appliances, no — fridges, freezers, ranges, water heaters and A/C units are white goods, banned from Florida landfills (F.S. 403.708(12)(d)), and federal EPA rules require refrigerant to be recovered first. Duval residents can book a curbside appliance pickup through 630-CITY, or our junk removal crew can take them to recycling.
What happens to the debris after pickup?
It goes to a permitted facility, not a random dump. In Jacksonville that means a site the City designates (Ord. Code Sec. 380.302) — the City's landfill is the Trail Ridge Landfill in Baldwin. Clay County waste goes to the Rosemary Hill facility in Green Cove Springs, and St. Johns County C&D to the St. Marks C&D facility or the Waste Pro transfer station in Elkton. Metal, concrete, asphalt, wood, cardboard and clean yard waste are separated and recycled whenever possible.
