The 20 yard container in Jacksonville
When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is where we usually end up — it is the most popular size we rent. It handles the jobs most homes and smaller job sites produce — a whole-home cleanout, a multi-room renovation, a roof, a landscaping project, a move or an estate cleanup, light demolition — without being so tall that loading turns into a chore. It holds about six pickup loads, or roughly 110 to 130 trash bags.
It is about 22 feet long, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. Where it fits, it fits everything else about the job, and the 4.5-foot sides keep it easy to load by hand.
Renovations, roofs, whole-home cleanouts
Furniture, boxes and household junk from a whole house, drywall, flooring, cabinets and lumber from a multi-room remodel, a house cleared before a sale or a move — these are 20 yard jobs. Roofers use it on most homes; tell us roughly how big the roof is and we estimate the weight before the truck leaves the yard.
It is also the standard box for light demolition and mixed construction debris — doors, framing, drywall, windows. Keep household garbage out of a construction load: under Florida law, mixing construction and demolition debris with other kinds of solid waste means the whole load is no longer classed as C&D (F.S. 403.703(6)), and a C&D facility can only take C&D debris (FDEP Rule 62-701.730(4)(a)). If most of the load is concrete, dirt, tile or brick, a smaller box is the safer weight call.
What the 20 yard includes
Delivery, pickup, the standard rental period and disposal up to the included three to four tons — about 6,000 to 8,000 pounds — in one flat price, with boards under the container on request. No hidden fuel surcharges. If you are loading shingles, tile or concrete and think you will go over, say so when you book — we would rather plan it than surprise you.
Suitability
Is the 20 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 20 yard for
- Whole-home, moving and estate cleanouts
- Multi-room renovations — drywall, flooring, cabinets, lumber
- Roofing on most homes
- Landscaping projects — branches, shrubs, green waste
- Light demolition — doors, framing, windows
Pick a different size for
- All-concrete, all-brick or all-dirt loads (use a 10 or 15)
- Major construction and demolition — that is a 30 or 40
- Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length plus room for the truck
- Asbestos, paint, propane tanks, tires, car batteries or refrigerant appliances
Placing a 20 yard container on a Jacksonville-area property
It needs a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, room for the truck to back in, and clear space overhead — no low wires or branches. On your own driveway or lot in Jacksonville we found no City permit rule for a roll-off; in a City street, sidewalk or right-of-way you need a Right-of-Way permit from Public Works (Ordinance Code Sec. 744.110) — $127 residential or $191 commercial, doubled if the work starts first — and on a state road the right-of-way is FDOT's, with no FDOT permit path for a roll-off. Other towns have their own rules — Atlantic Beach never lets a roll-off stay on a paved road overnight and wants it emptied or removed when a tropical storm or hurricane warning covers Duval County, and Fernandina Beach wants a temporary use permit even on private property. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. Protective boards go under the container on request. Each town page covers its own code.

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?
About six, or roughly 110 to 130 trash bags. Think of it as a whole house of furniture and junk, or the debris from a multi-room renovation.
Can a 20 yard fit in a Jacksonville driveway?
Usually — it fits many two-car driveways. It is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, and the truck needs room to set it down. On your own driveway we found no City of Jacksonville permit rule for a roll-off. The street is different: anything placed in a City street, sidewalk or right-of-way needs a Right-of-Way permit from Public Works (Ordinance Code Sec. 744.110) — $127 residential or $191 commercial, doubled if the work starts before the permit is issued.
What is the weight limit on a 20 yard?
About three to four tons is included, depending on the debris. Shingles, tile, concrete and wet green waste are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not.
How long is the rental?
Most standard rentals include 7 days, and we can usually extend for an additional daily or weekly fee if the job runs on. Call before the pickup date.
Can I get a 20 yard the same day?
Often. Same-day and next-day delivery are available in many areas depending on availability, and the 20 yard is one of the most requested same-day sizes. Call early in the day for the best chance. The yard is on the west side of Jacksonville, so the city itself is the quickest run; the furthest places we cover, like Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island at about 38 to 39 road miles, are more likely to be next day. We tell you straight.
