Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in Fernandina Beach

Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.

  • City Hall at 204 Ash Street.
  • Construction waste — over two cubic yards, it must be removed by the owner or the person doing the work, and nothing may be put on a public street or alley (§66-5).
  • Fenced sites — construction site dumpsters must sit inside the fence and be gone before a certificate of occupancy is issued (§22-261).
  • Sandhill Recycle Center on CR108 in Yulee — the private site Nassau County points to for construction debris and yard waste.

What comes out of Fernandina Beach properties

Kitchens, baths and roofs in 15s and 20s, larger remodels in 20s and 30s, and a 10 or 15 for concrete and brick. City code defines a roll-off as a container for construction and demolition debris or garbage rubbish (§66-1). Florida keeps lead-acid batteries, used oil, white goods and whole tires out of landfills, and loads must be covered on the road (F.S. 316.520(2)).

Permits, placement and who may haul in Fernandina Beach

Who may haul — the rule that matters: §66-36 says refuse accumulated in the city is collected "only by the city," the City Commission may grant a nonexclusive franchise, and no person may collect or convey refuse over any street in the city "without the approval of the city commission." We check the City's rules before booking a container inside city limits. We're licensed and insured.

Temporary use permit: the Land Development Code allows roll-off dumpsters as temporary structures (§5.02.06) — with a temporary use permit, for up to 30 days per lot per year with one 30-day renewal or for the life of the building permit, on private property unless a right-of-way permit is issued, at least one foot from any property line, and without blocking pedestrian access.

In the right-of-way: §70-2(a) prohibits encroachments in and use of the public right-of-way without a permit, applied for at the Community Services Department. On a state road, FDOT's rules give no permit for a roll-off in the right-of-way (Rule 14-20.008).

Knocking something down: FDEP needs a Notice of Demolition at least 10 working days before work starts, even when no asbestos is found. Homes of four or fewer units are generally exempt, unless they are part of a bigger project, were used commercially or are coming down for a commercial building. Outside Duval the notice goes to the FDEP district or local program office for the area. Regulated asbestos cannot go to a Florida C&D facility (Rule 62-701.730(19)), so it never goes in our containers — tell us if the survey finds any.

Summarized from the city's published code and web pages as read in October 2026. Codes change — confirm with the department listed before you rely on it.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in Fernandina Beach

Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.

  1. 1

Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask the location, what you are clearing, roughly how much there is, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us. No long forms, no guesswork.

  2. 2

We size it and quote it flat

You get one number covering delivery, pickup, disposal, the standard 7-day rental and a stated weight allowance. If a smaller box does the job we will say so. If it is concrete, shingles or dirt, we say up front that weight decides the size.

  3. 3

    Delivered where you want it

The driver sets the container on the driveway, lot or job site where you asked, with protective boards under it if you want them. Often same-day or next-day, depending on availability. You do not need to be home.

  4. 4

    Load at your own pace

Keep it level with the top rim and keep the banned items out — tires, car and rechargeable batteries, used oil, paint, chemicals, propane tanks, asbestos, and appliances such as fridges, A/C units and water heaters. Need more time or a swap mid-job? One call and we are on it.

  5. 5

We haul it and dispose of it right

The load goes to a permitted facility for where the job is — in Jacksonville, the sites the City designates, such as its Trail Ridge Landfill — with metal, concrete, cardboard, wood and clean yard waste recycled whenever possible. You get your driveway back the way you left it.
