The 40 yard container in Jacksonville

The 40 yard is a job-site container, and the largest size we offer. Eight-foot sides mean it is loaded by a crew or by machine, and it usually wants a lot or a job site rather than a house driveway. Commercial construction, demolition, full-property renovations, warehouse and office cleanouts, major roofing projects and large event cleanups — that is where it lives. It holds about twelve pickup loads, or roughly 230 to 250 trash bags, and the extra volume cuts down the number of swaps on a big job.

It is light, bulky debris that justifies the 40: drywall, framing, shelving, fixtures, pallets, packaging, office furniture. Concrete, dirt, brick and asphalt can exceed the weight allowance long before the box looks full, so for heavy rubble we usually recommend a smaller container or a split-load plan alongside it.

Construction, demolition and big commercial jobs

General contractors on commercial builds, developers and demolition crews, property managers renovating whole buildings, businesses clearing a warehouse or an office — those are the regular 40 yard customers. Demolition comes with paperwork: FDEP wants a Notice of Demolition at least 10 working days before work starts on a building covered by the federal asbestos rule, even when no asbestos was found, and a project removing 260 linear feet, 160 square feet or 35 cubic feet or more of regulated asbestos material is a full asbestos project. Regulated asbestos may not go into a C&D disposal unit (FDEP Rule 62-701.730(19)), so it never goes in a roll-off. We will ask what the building is before we quote.

Every load has to end up somewhere legal. In Jacksonville, solid waste may be deposited only at sites designated by the City's Solid Waste director (Ordinance Code Sec. 380.302), and C&D disposal sites in Duval County must hold a City certificate (Sec. 386.201(c)). The City's own landfill is the Trail Ridge Landfill, 5110 US Hwy 301 S in Baldwin, about 4½ miles south of I-10 — open Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., closed Sunday. In Clay County, waste from businesses goes to the Rosemary Hill facility in Green Cove Springs, and St. Johns County sends C&D to the St. Marks C&D facility or the Waste Pro transfer station in Elkton. On the road, Florida law wants the load covered and secured so nothing falls or blows out (F.S. 316.520(2)).

Access and placement for a 40 yard

The truck needs a clear run in — more room if it has to turn — a flat, stable surface and clear space overhead. On a job site we place it where the crews can work around it. A 40 in a public street needs permission first: in Jacksonville, a Right-of-Way permit from Public Works (Ordinance Code Sec. 744.110), with a surety bond on file and an approved Maintenance of Traffic plan for anything that affects traffic or pedestrians; on a state road the right-of-way is FDOT's, and FDOT's rules exclude waste receptacles from its general use permit (Rule 14-20.010), so the container stays on the property. Atlantic Beach caps roll-offs used for concrete, soil and other heavy debris at 20 cubic yards (City Code Sec. 16-8(d)(4)). Each town page says what that town's code asks for.

Suitability

Is the 40 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 40 yard for

  • Commercial construction sites
  • Demolition and full-property renovations
  • Warehouse and office cleanouts
  • Major roofing projects with a crew
  • Large event and community cleanups on a swap schedule

Pick a different size for

  • Residential driveways (it rarely fits and you will pay for unused space)
  • Heavy-only loads — concrete, dirt, brick and asphalt go in smaller boxes
  • Jobs without crew or machine loading
  • Asbestos, hazardous chemicals, tires, batteries or medical waste

Placing a 40 yard container on a Jacksonville-area property

It needs a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide on a lot or job site, a clear run for the truck (more room if it has to turn), and clear space overhead. On your own driveway or lot in Jacksonville we found no City permit rule for a roll-off; in a City street, sidewalk or right-of-way you need a Right-of-Way permit from Public Works (Ordinance Code Sec. 744.110) — $127 residential or $191 commercial, doubled if the work starts first — and on a state road the right-of-way is FDOT's, with no FDOT permit path for a roll-off. Other towns have their own rules — Atlantic Beach never lets a roll-off stay on a paved road overnight and wants it emptied or removed when a tropical storm or hurricane warning covers Duval County, and Fernandina Beach wants a temporary use permit even on private property. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. Protective boards go under the container on request. Each town page covers its own code.

40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Will a 40 yard dumpster fit on a residential property?

Rarely. It needs a lot, a long drive or a job site. For houses, a 30, or a 20 with swaps, usually works better.

How do you load a 40 yard?

By crew or by machine. The sides are eight feet high, so hand loading from the ground is slow — plan for a skid steer or a ramp.

Can I put concrete in a 40 yard?

Within the weight limit, yes — but not as the main load. About five to six tons is included, and concrete, dirt, brick or asphalt reach that at a fraction of the volume. Put the rubble in a 10 or 15 alongside the 40, or ask us for a split-load plan.

Do you offer swaps on long jobs?

Yes. For commercial construction and ongoing projects we run recurring rotations — pull the full one, drop an empty. Tell us the expected duration and we will quote the whole job.

We run roll-off containers out of the Edgewood Avenue yard to every place below. Jacksonville and the closest towns are often same-day; the edges of the area are more likely next-day. Clay, St. Johns and Nassau counties each license or franchise haulers in their unincorporated areas, and some cities keep collection to their own franchisee — each page says so plainly.
