The 10 yard container in Jacksonville

The 10 yard is the one we send when the job is one room, one garage or one weekend. At about 14 feet long it is the shortest container we run, so it fits on a lot of Jacksonville driveways that a 20 would swallow — an older lot in Riverside, a tight street in Arlington, a townhouse drive out at the Beaches, a back corner of a job site. The trade-off is volume: it holds about three pickup loads, or roughly 50 to 70 trash bags, and cabinets and drywall fill it fast.

Where the 10 yard earns its keep is weight. Concrete, brick, dirt, tile and shingles hit the limit long before a big box looks full, and the 10 includes about one to two tons. Heavy debris is exactly what the smaller boxes are for — the old rule of thumb holds: concrete, dirt, brick, asphalt, gravel and shingles typically go in a 10 or a 15, not a 30. Tell us what is going in and we will help you plan a load that stays inside the limit.

Small remodels, one-room cleanouts and the heavy stuff

A bathroom tear-out — tile, tub, vanity, a bit of drywall — sits comfortably in a 10 yard. So does a garage or attic cleanout, a flooring change-out, a DIY project, a rental cleanup or a patch of yard debris. Roofers use it for smaller roofs where the shingles are heavy but the volume is not.

It suits Jacksonville because regular pickup stops short of most project debris. The City's curbside service takes only a little building material from a do-it-yourself job — up to 1 cubic yard a week in non-automated areas, or 2 cubic yards every other week in automated areas — and none at all from work a contractor did; the contractor has to remove it (Ordinance Code Sec. 380.207). Anything more than that, the City says, needs a construction debris container. A 10 yard on the driveway is the smallest one there is.

The weight line on a 10 yard

About one to two tons — 2,000 to 4,000 pounds — is included, depending on the debris. Mixed household junk never gets close. A 10 filled to the rim with concrete, dirt or shingles can, so spread it evenly, keep it level with the top, and tell us it is coming. If the load goes over the included weight, extra disposal fees can apply based on the landfill's weight charges — we would rather plan that with you before you start.

Suitability

Is the 10 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 10 yard for

  • Bathroom or small kitchen remodel
  • Garage, attic or single-room cleanout
  • Flooring and tile removal
  • Roofing shingles from a smaller roof
  • Concrete, brick, dirt or tile within the weight limit

Pick a different size for

  • A whole-house cleanout — that is a 20 or a 30
  • Bulky furniture from several rooms
  • Tires, car batteries, used oil, paint, fuel or propane tanks
  • Fridges, freezers, A/C units and water heaters — Florida keeps white goods out of landfills

Placing a 10 yard container on a Jacksonville-area property

It needs a flat, stable spot about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, room for the truck to back in, and clear space overhead — no low wires or branches. On your own driveway or lot in Jacksonville we found no City permit rule for a roll-off; in a City street, sidewalk or right-of-way you need a Right-of-Way permit from Public Works (Ordinance Code Sec. 744.110) — $127 residential or $191 commercial, doubled if the work starts first — and on a state road the right-of-way is FDOT's, with no FDOT permit path for a roll-off. Other towns have their own rules — Atlantic Beach never lets a roll-off stay on a paved road overnight and wants it emptied or removed when a tropical storm or hurricane warning covers Duval County, and Fernandina Beach wants a temporary use permit even on private property. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. Protective boards go under the container on request. Each town page covers its own code.

10 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

How much space does a 10 yard dumpster need?

The container is about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide. The truck needs enough room to back in and set it down on a flat, stable surface, and clear space overhead — watch for low wires and tree branches. Move cars, trailers and equipment out of the way, mark the spot if you will not be home, and the driver places it where you asked.

Can I put concrete in a 10 yard dumpster?

Yes — it is one of the main reasons people rent one. Heavy materials are typically restricted to the smaller containers because of transport weight limits, so concrete, brick, dirt and tile go in a 10 or 15, spread evenly and level with the top. Keep it separate from household junk and tell us roughly how much there is.

How long do I get it for?

Most standard rentals include 7 days. Need longer? Call before the scheduled pickup and we can usually extend it for an additional daily or weekly fee. Finished early? Call and we will schedule an earlier pickup.

Is it the cheapest option?

It is our smallest and lowest-cost container. Rentals in Jacksonville range from roughly $350 to $750 depending on the size, the debris, the weight, how long you keep it and where it is going, with delivery, pickup and disposal typically included and no hidden fuel surcharges. If you think you might outgrow it, say so — we can swap it for a bigger box if the job expands.
